New Beginnings - Watercolour on paper 30cm x 20cm

My interest in abstract art blossomed from a visit to The Centre Pompidou in Paris in the mid 90s. I was in awe at the modern and contemporary art on display, and also pretty impressed with the outdoor escalators. I still have the postcards I collected of the Kandinsky, Delaunay, Miro and Matisse masterpieces. They have adorned the walls in many places I’ve lived and, along with their Blu Tack stains, still serve as inspiration for the work that I create today.

In my 20s I studied and trained as a medicinal chemist. Chemistry is an endless source of inspiring colours and shapes - many of the molecules I worked on have found their way into my paintings. I no longer work in science, but keep the alias CarolineTheChemist as it has contributed much to me.

In my 30s I embarked on a journey to study and learn more about painting and drawing. I found that, with some good tutorage, I’m more capable than I realised! Pens and ink are great, but my passion will always be for strong colours and shapes and the feelings they can evoke.

I’ve moved all about the south of England for the last few decades, but have finally come to settle in rural Kent with my husband and a menagerie of animals. I’ve created and painted throughout my life, although sadly for me art has always taken a back seat to studying, working and earning a living. I can’t keep the desire to create contained though - when the urge bubbles up, it’s difficult to focus on anything else!
